Q: Maria, let’s start with your personal journey. How has motherhood shaped your approach to running M-KAE?
Motherhood has influenced every part of my journey with M-KAE. Having three little girls has made me appreciate clothing that is both beautiful and practical—something that works for real life. I design with that mindset, creating timeless pieces that make women feel effortlessly put together, no matter how chaotic life gets. My daughters have also reinforced my belief in quality over quantity—choosing well-made, versatile pieces that stand the test of time, just like the ones I kept reaching for during my pregnancies.
Q: Balancing entrepreneurship and motherhood sounds challenging. How do you make it work?
I won’t lie—it's not always easy. We had three kids in three years, so life at home is full-on chaos (in the best way). But I wouldn’t have it any other way. All three of my girls have been with me at work until they turned one and started daycare. And of course, I couldn’t do this without my husband, Joachim. He’s been my biggest support—helping both with M-KAE and with our girls. We really are the best team.
The Birth of M-KAE
Q: Let’s talk about M-KAE. What inspired you to start your own brand?
I just couldn’t stop myself! I’ve always been drawn to clothing—I was sketching designs as a kid, and after high school, I naturally pursued a design degree. Moving to Copenhagen and growing older, I knew the time was right. Honestly, it was never a question of if I would start M-KAE, but when. My family and friends weren’t surprised at all when I finally launched—it had been in me all along.
Q: Sustainability is a big topic in fashion. How do you approach it at M-KAE?
For me, sustainability is about designing with longevity in mind. Fast fashion is built on trends, but I want M-KAE pieces to be timeless—something you wear season after season. We produce in small batches to minimize waste and prioritize high-quality fabrics that last. The most sustainable wardrobe is one you don’t have to replace constantly.
Q: And the name—M-KAE—how did you come up with it?
When I founded M-KAE six years ago, I made a mood board to brainstorm the perfect name. The moment I wrote down “M-KAE,” I just knew it was the one. There’s no deep meaning behind it, but it’s a shorter version of my name, “Maria Kragmann.” It felt right from the start, and it still does today.
