Inspired by the music culture of her youth, Nicky Zimmermann takes us back to 70’s Sydney for Fall 2021. A time when television and music provided an exciting and indulgent escape from reality – highly relatable in todays current climate!

Embodying the optimistic mood of the era, the latest collection evokes joy via an array of playful yet sophisticated pieces. Signature floaty, frill adorned dresses and blouses with ballooning sleeves bounce alongside laid back masculine suiting. Throughout each look we find dazzling details in the form of embellishments, crystal beads and buttons and trails of sequins atop of wisps of golden sparkling tulle and netting.

This season I started with the memory of a music television show in Australia in the 70’s and 80’s called Countdown. Growing up in the suburbs, between 6pm and 7pm each Sunday night, it was this exciting and inspirational escape for me, where music, fashion and a wider world came together. There were all these great international bands who were touring Australia, performing alongside established and emerging local artists, and these hilariously candid interviews with the host, Molly Meldrum. I loved the energy and creativity that came together with each show – it was so addictive! It was a really important influence on me growing up as a teenager, which is funny when I think back to it. The collection themes came as much from the mood it evoked as much as the eras it traversed.

Feminine elements such as bows and ethereal silhouettes are off-set by flashes of tough patent or leather boots and chunky loafers, whilst elongated coats drape across shoulders, adding an all important touch of rock ‘n’ roll.

For the first time, Zimmermann have incorporated denim into their catwalk offering. Of course, they are figure hugging with billowing flared hems, each adorned with an impactful topstitched ‘Z’ and a subtle slit at the hem to add a contemporary twist. Paired with a frilled or pussy bow blouse and heeled boots, they are effortlessly cool and chic.

Here’s to hoping that Fall 2021 follows suit and fulfils the optimism and joy that Zimmermann has bestowed upon us for the season ahead!
